Sheps Hollow closed for safety reasons

The footpath at Sheps Hollow has been closed for safety reasons this afternoon.

There has been movement in the steps and the hand rail is about to give way.

The area is taped off and Dorset Council who have responsibilities for the path have been advised.

Please do observe the closure for your own safety until it can be assessed by engineers

Storm Dennis

For the second weekend running, we are facing another storm that will bring strong winds and heavy rain .

A yellow weather warning is in place for Dorset, although there are also amber warnings in Devon and Hampshire in the next 48 hours.

Please stay safe at the coast and stay away from large waves.

In a coastal emergency dial 999 and ask for Coastguard.

Multi Agency Service

A large multi agency search  started at 08.25 this morning following concern for a male in the Studland area.

Police received a concern for welfare call for a 35 year old male.

Coastguard Officers from Swanage, St Albans, Kimmeridge and Lulworth  have spent the day searching along with Colleagues from RNLI Swanage and Poole.  Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 175 and the Police helicopter have also been searching throughout the day.  Dorset Police Officers and DorSAR volunteers have also conducted searches in the Studland Area.

Teams have been stood down tonight at 18.00

Anyone with information or knowledge are requested to call Dorset Police quoting incident 11:71

Search

Rescue teams were tasked to search for a male from Surrey believed to be in the area.

Backing up our colleagues from St Albans,  areas were searched  along with colleagues from Dorset Police, DorSAR, NPAS and Swanage RNLI lifeboat.

Deployed just before 16.00 ,teams searched a large area south of Swanage and Worth.   With the weather deteriorating the search continued until  23.00

Storm Ciara

A yellow warning of wind has been issued from midnight on Saturday until midnight Sunday.

Storm Ciara will bring very strong winds and potentially some disruption to travel throughout Sunday.

Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible.

Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown into sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

Some damage to buildings could happen.

Travel could face cancellation.

Some roads and bridges may close.

Power cuts may occur.

Person cut off by the tide

After the incident yesterday at Peveril Point , the team were tasked again with both the Swanage RNLI lifeboats to Old Harry Rocks.

A report of a person cut off by the tide saw the team head towards Studland.  A lifeboat that was training in the area also went to the aid of the person picking a male up from the base of the cliff.

With the person safe the lifeboats and team were stood down.

Incident at Peveril Point

A 71 year old male on a day trip to Swanage from New Milton tripped ,  stumbled then fell off the  cliff  falling about 35/40 feet at Peveril Point today.

Observed by a member of the public who acted fast and called the Coastguard and Ambulance the emergency services responded immediately.

The Swanage Coastguard team , Coastguard helicopter Rescue 175 , South Western Ambulance, St Albans Coastguard, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and Dorset Police coordinated a rescue of the male who had fallen and suffered a serious head injury.

The male was treated by Paramedics , Air Ambulance Doctor and Coastguard team members 

The Coastguard helicopter was used to airlift the casualty to a land ambulance before being taken to Poole Hospital for treatment.

Rescue 175 was on a training flight when diverted to Swanage to assist in the rescue. 

The member of public acted very quickly dialling 999 and raising the alarm,

Assisting Police

This morning the Swanage Coastguard  team , backed up will colleagues from St Albans Coastguard were requested to assist Dorset Police with an incident on Ballard Down.

The NPAS ( Police Helicopter) along with the Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 175 from Lee on Solent were tasked to assist also.

The Police helicopter located a person and directed units to the person who was walked to a vehicle and colleagues from the Ambulance service.

It’s not always straight forward

You never quite know what you might do next in the Coastguard ....

A patrol a few weeks who found some cows had Escape from their field after a gate had been left open.

Helping the warden the cows were soon away from the cliff and safely back where they should be.

Items found on beach

Today’s patrol were at Studland when they located some clothing on the beach which were a little out keeping to the time of year and weather.

Concerned that a swimmer may have been on difficulty, they started to carry out a shore line search.

Having searches for about 10 minutes the owner was located safe and well having left the clothing to dry.
