New Boat

Today the Swanage Rowing Club, named their new gig.

Dancing Ledge is the 3rd gig the club have in Swanage, along with Old Harry and Peveril.

The club is really doing well in Swanage and really does need their new building to house the gigs properly which are stored in a temporary building near the pier.

Membership is open to any age, so fancy a go.....?

Rowing Club

Some of you may remember a rescue we did back in June, when a male fell off Ballard? The rowing club of Swanage played a major part in that rescue, by locating the casualty and giving 1st aid until Coastguard, Lifeboat and helicopter arrived.

To thank all those involved on that day, Swanage Coastguard presented a framed photo of the helicopter during that rescue to the crew of the gig.

Hopefully they will have their new building one day to hang the picture up in!

Working Together

Last Monday, we got a call reporting someone stuck on Ballard....this wasn't going to be an easy job.
If its the 1st part of Ballard we may have to carry the equipment from Sheps Hollow, further along and we access the cliff from the top so its important to locate the casualty 1st before setting off.
Having all arrived at the station , we searched and searched but couldn't see anyone. One of the team spotted the Rowing club just under Ballard so knowing they listen on a VHF radio we gave them a call......into action goes the rowers at a speed some motorboats would be proud of!

With Steve Vince at the helm we soon established the location and set off, this really did help us and a credit to his crew, but it didn't end there......

When we arrived we found Steve had carefully put one of the rowers ashore who happened to a 1st aider and was treating the casualty who had fallen about 15ft.

So on behalf of the Coastguard, thank you to Steve, Holly and the rest of the crew for a job well done.

It goes to show how well we work together in Swanage.

Quiet Stroll

It was a lovely evening in Swanage, so off down Burlington Chine for a quiet stroll along the beach. Suddenly I hear women screaming!!!!!

…..reach for the phone

…..oh it’s alright it’s the Swanage Sea Rowing Club (SSRC) ladies team practising in the bay!

Phew!

Which reminds me; I hear on the grape vine that SSRC have overcome their first big hurdle in securing a much needed ‘Gig Shed’. Gig? – Yes, you know big long boat from Cornwall.

Swanage Town Council have apparently agreed in principle to support a scheme to develop on land opposite the Pierhead building; great stuff!...nice to see the Town Council supporting this project!

Now it’s up to the club to liaise with the Planners at Purbeck District Council to find an acceptable scheme. Not easy given the site is outside the ‘settlement boundary’ of the town and therefore normally protected from non-essential development. But in this case SSRC have a very strong case and importantly community support. Well done chaps, especially Bryan Taylor who’s worked so hard on this.

Oh and as a Cornishman it’s great to see Cornish Pilot Gigs in Swanage!
