Mind the Edge

North Swanage is not the only area that is suffering from landslips at present.

Peveril Point and the Downs are also an area that has seen slippage.

 At Peveril Point there is a section of cliff that is an overhang. Please stay away from the edge.

 A section has slid near to the toilets at Peveril Point.  With various slips this can increase the risk of debris falling on to the beach.

Please observe the safety signs and in an emergency dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

More from the Pines Hotel works

A further update following the photos earlier in the week.  With the pile of rock and earth slowly being removed, the extent of the cliff stabilisation works can be clearly seen.

Elsewhere in Swanage, the RNLI crew continue training on their new boat today, the steam railway has a gala weekend with scheduled trains going to the outskirts of Wareham for the first time and the sun is out.

Pines work taking shape

The work under the Pines Hotel is taking shape and the material on the beach is slowly being removed.

Zig zag slip

It appears there has been more of a slip at the Zig Zag near Durlston. 

We recommend that you keep clear of landslips and observe any warning signs.

A walk along the north of the bay this week showed the erosion so far this winter.

The other side of the Landslip

Round the other end of the path at the Zig Zag. What is not known is what is happening at the top and underneath the slip and needs assessing before any possible clearance.

This is the main reason the path has been closed for the time being and the diversion of South West Coast Path put in place.

Please don't ignore the closures anywhere along the coastline. It is done to ensure the safety of the public and prevent incident like at Highcliffe yesterday.

If you saw this sign , what would you do?

Turn back and follow the instructions or ask the Coastguard patrol if its safe to carry on ?

Then despite the warning sign and words of advice from the Coastguard you choose to ignore and carry on in the hope you and your family don't get hurt.

Of course it's only advice until an accident occurs and then...........







This is a recent fall and the Country Park wardens asked if the area could be taped off until another survey could be carried out on Monday.





We taped the area off at the request of the wardens , it's there for a reason not to be ignored. Whilst the slip has occurred there may be further movement which could put you and others at risk.





Please take notice of signs, tape and barriers - it's there to protect you ,not to spoil your day.

Fresh Cliff Fall

A very fresh cliff fall discovered this afternoon.

After the heavy rain this morning, this small fall shows the collapse of the ceiling of this small cave.

Cliff edges are dangerous locations.

With the recent rain followed by heavy frost, cliffs falls will increase.

Be aware , stay safe.

Day of Rest

Last week, someone was asking for an update and some pictures of the stabilisation works underneath the Pines Hotel. 
We popped along yesterday, but being a Sunday, there wasn't a lot going on.


The seafront access point was all secured up.....

At the worksite itself, a reminder that there is no longer a guaranteed all-states-of-the-tide safe route to the north end of the bay.  Anyone finding themselves cut off on the 'wrong' side of the works should look to exit the beach at Sheps Hollow

Slip watch

The patrols this week checked the state of the cliffs from Shore Road to Ballard.

This bit of cliff under the Grand has slipped forward tipping a wall and railings forward .

Cliff work under the Pines

Finally managed to get out to see the cliff work under the Pines Hotel today.




Very steep bank which was has been built to allow work at a higher level. We would suggest that you do not climb or allow children near to the base of the pile of rocks.


At high tide you can not get around the base of the ramp - stay off the rocks.

Cliff work continues

Work has now started on the raised platform under the Pines Hotel.

This area can be cut off by the tide so care should be taken especially around the rocks that have been laid to construct the ramp.

Stabilisation Work start

Walkers on Swanage Beach may have noticed some work started on the beach in the last few days.






This ramp is being built to allow access to the beach and allow stabilisation work under the Pines Hotel to start.

The Town Council have allowed contractors access on to the main beach to allow machinery access to carry out this important work.

There are more details on the Town Council website which gives the contact details of the contractors should the public have any questions or concerns.

A similar ramp will be built under the pines, today Coastguards visited the contractors to look at the site.




Machinery will be moving about during low tides and the public are being urged to observe the safety notices.

There will be occasions on certain tides that the beach will be cut off, please check the tide and stay off the ramps.

On the Move

The cliffs to the North of Sheps Hollow continue to slip: This recent fall is about 200m away from the access steps and makes getting cut off a real possibility for beach users in that area.

A good low tide this weekend saw Steve go out and take some photos of the cliffs.

In same afternoon Kerry nearly called in an incident after  a dog got stuck in the mud from one of the slips, but thankful the dog managed to get out.
