Coastguard's are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
So when our great colleague John Bentham became ill we set him a little project to keep him busy and that was to find an incident record for every day of the year.
The Coastguard station ( not the new one at North Beach) was opened in 1842 and our records of incidents go back to 1925 with a gap for the Second World War when the service was under the Admiralty and a period in the 1980’s which have been lost.
John managed to record one incident on every day of the year except for about 15 dates, a diary was used to record them.
When we sadly lost John last year , the book was reviewed and having had some busy years the missing dates were soon filled in.
So as it stands at the moment we have a record of an incident for almost every day of the year except three dates in December which includes Christmas Eve.
In a lasting memory to our great friend we will continue to search the records and ensure his legacy isn’t forgotten.
