The Old Days

This wonderful picture was passed to me by Dave Gough the previous Station Officer of Swanage Coastguard. Taken in 1981 when Coastguards were grown up and I was in shorts!

This was before the old station had its extension and Swanage had two landrovers with winches on the front

O how times change!

I remember many happy sunday afternoons Paul and I going on patrol with our dad in these Landrovers. Those were the days when HMCG used proper 4x4's and proper engine driven capstan winches. Trusty Landrover Series 3, Dunlop Trakgrip tyres and Fairey Capstan winches. Brill !!

I think this photo was taken whilst the lookout at St Albans was being rebuilt. During that period Swanage lookout was manned for 24 hours, I remember dad doing night watches. This explains the two MRU's, the closer one in the photo was originally from St Albans (Reg: DUC 24V) and was nicknamed "Duck" by my brother and I. The furthest MRU was Swanages main unit, I can't remember the full reg but it was on a "S" plate. For some reason "Duck" later became Swanages main MRU and the other unit disappeared.

Hello Si,
Just thought you might like to know I have just started restoring my 1979 Land Rover which has revealed its true identity as a Coast Guard model.
Her registration is DUC 11V. Your station masters photo will come in very useful. At present we are down to a bare chassis, many body panels and boxes of bits. If you have any further photos, I would love to see them.
My email is a.jackson@astonenvironmental.co.uk

Andrew
